BHUBANESWAR: Abhay Sahoo, who has been spearheading the anti-Posco movement for eight years, was arrested from Biju Patnaik airport here on Saturday while he was on his way to board a flight to Chennai.
“We arrested him in connection with the March 2 bomb blast at Dhinkia village in which three persons were killed,” SP (Jagatsinghpur) Satyabrata Bhoi told TOI.
Dhinkia is considered headquarters of the anti-Posco stir. Narahari Sahoo, Tarun Mandal and Manas Jena were killed in the explosion while they were possibly preparing crude bombs that went off accidentally. Police had booked Sahoo under sections 307 (murder), 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy), 34 (common intention) of IPC and three (causing explosion likely to endanger life) and four (attempt to cause explosion or for making explosive to endanger life) of Explosive Substances Act.
A Jagstinghpur police team arrested Sahoo as he entered the airport around 7.50 am. “Sahu was to leave for Tamil Nadu, to attend a meeting,” a cop said. Police produced Sahoo in a Kujang court, where his bail petition was rejected and he was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti president Sahoo said, “The anti-land acquisition stir would get further strengthened as my arrest is going to provide fodder to it. ”
